What is a metre?

Metres or meters?
Metres or meters?

Maybe you wonder why people sometimes spell “metre” and sometime “meter”. Is 1 metre exactly 1 meter?

Metres vs meter

The short answer is that meters and metres are exatly the same thing and that 1 metre equals 1 meter. A slightly longer answer is that metre is the British spelling and meter is the American spelling. The symbol for both metres and meter is “m”. The US still use the Imperial Unit system with feet, inches and so on. I will write more about that in another article. Meter is a base unit for length in the International System of Units (SI).

How long is a metre, exactly?

One meter is how long light travels in 1/299 792 458 s. This is hard to double-check wether this is correct or not unless you don’t have access to an advanced laboratory. One meter is approximately 3.28 feet or 39.37 inches.
